What is it about the race industry that they can’t help but be racist when equality rules look like they are going to be applied to them? After all, just take a look at the Equality and Human Rights Commission who are planning to reduce their numbers by 50% running into the fact that because they (over) employ black, ethnic minority or otherwise disabled people that these people are now claiming it would be racist/sexist/disablist to do that very thing. Different rules would as ever seem to apply to certain groups.
Staff at the Government’s equality quango are insisting they cannot be sacked – because it would break equality laws.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission is set to cut worker numbers by half as a result of budget cuts.
But in a letter, employees have warned to do so would breach the very equality laws the quango seeks to defend.
They say the jobs would mean virtually all of the commission’s employees who are black, ethnic minority or otherwise disabled will lose their jobs.
In a letter to the commission’s deputy chairwoman, Baroness Prosser, staff members wrote: ‘The deletion of these posts coupled with the planned closure of many offices will mean that virtually all the commission’s BME [black and ethnic minority] and disabled staff will lose their jobs.’
The letter says cutting staff from minority groups and the disabled will breach the Equality Act – the law it is tasked with enforcing.
My heart bleeds for them.
Now I’m no fan of the Equalities quango, I believe it reinforces prejudice against the majority for the minority. All we need are equality laws, not an enforcing body dedicated to seeing racism wherever it looks. Therefore if an employer has on their books a majority of black, ethnic minority or otherwise disabled people then it cannot be anything other than fair when the majority of them have to go, after all to do anything else would surely be discriminatory against the minority able bodied white amongst them?
Sadly though you just cannot seem to apply common sense when dealing with either the government or the race industry, you apparently cannot be treat the same as anyone else if you belong to a minority, apparently it’s in the rules somewhere (according to them) that they are untouchable.
Equality should mean exactly that, you’re treat the same as everyone else under similar circumstances. That’s not to say that in certain circumstances we make special allowances for the disabled in order for them to do their jobs with greater ease, just that if the majority of people working in an area are disabled they take their chances along with everyone else. As for ethnic minorities? So long as you aren’t discriminated against, then in similar circumstances you take your chances as well.
Different rules should not apply.
