Police trying to prevent terrorists from obtaining guns warn a rise in parcels being sent to Britain due to online shopping is helping criminals to camouflage firearms being smuggled into the country.

Dave Thompson, chief constable of West Midlands police and the national lead for countering firearms, said there had been a surge in the number of guns circulating in the UK.

In a Guardian interview, he said firearms were being reactivated overseas and then ordered for delivery into the UK.

“Traditionally you’d have seen maybe six or seven years ago we’d be stopping people at Dover with 10 Baikals [a make of firearm] concealed in compartments in the car. That’s become less of a feature. What’s become more of a feature is weapons through the fast parcel system, individual items coming through.”

He said criminals were trying a range of tactics to avoid detection. “We have to watch a trend of disassembling the weapons and sending them in component parts.”

So he’s calling for more scanning of parcels, yes?

Well, no. Of course not. He’s demanding more armed police.

I suppose we should be thankful he isn’t demanding we stop ordering stuff online…

Thompson said the Paris attacks, in which Islamic State-inspired gunmen killed 130 people, meant police needed a “significant” increase in firepower.

His force, like others, had already put more armed officers on the streets and would train more, but he said extra money would be needed to reach the level he believes is needed.

“While we do plenty of firearms operations, we deal with people who there is not much debate we are going to win the encounter with, because we’re better trained, we’re better capable, they generally don’t fire back at us,” he said.

Well, no indeed. Some are going to find that very difficult, given they don’t have guns.

Thompson leads policing in an area with one of the highest concentrations of Muslims in Britain. He said his force, serving an area where 30% of people come from ethnic minorities, struggled to treat all fairly.

“I don’t think we are a fair organisation on race still,” he said.

Islam’s a religion. Not a race.

Maybe, just maybe, parliament should repeal the law that prevents law abiding citizens from having hand guns and other weapons. After all we all know that when having a gun becomes a criminal offense only criminals have guns.

As for more armed police, that should only come after there are more foot patrols through the streets so that the bobby on the beat gets to know the locals and can then spot any changes – just driving through at odd times does not cut it. In other words go back to what they did as a police ‘force’ rather than what they do now as a police ‘service’.

Agreed. We know that but how would they then oppress us?

With great difficulty I expect which is the main point – that is unless we allow ourselves to sleep walk into a police state, which is the direction of travel at the moment.

The Police can’t be everywhere at once. If you find yourself facing a gunman I hardly think he’s going to wait 20 mins for the Police to turn up.

Karl Denninger has written repeatedly on the mass shootings in America that have taken place in known gun free zones, like cinemas and schools. Anyone who wants to kill wants to avoid being killed, at least for as long as possible to get their 15 seconds of ‘fame’.

In his opinion carrying a gun is a deterrent as much as a defensive position to take. Wherever an incident has happened where someone was carrying a hidden firearm, the potential for destruction by the perpetrator was severely curtailed.

The idea that our government would rearm the population in this country is a complete non-starter. TPTB aren’t that stupid. An even quicker way to an armed revolution is something They will do everything they can to avoid. Armed Police, false security.

We aren’t safe at all. The wolves disguised as sheepdogs are already amongst the sheep.

I came back to Blighty for the first time in 23 years last August. My young son was rather shocked to see police in body armour with fully-automatic weapons, first at Birmingham airport, then in the tube.

They’d be better off patrolling the streets of London or Birmingham. They might then get to USE them!
