UK Defence

Just wondering what readers think of this:

Defence bosses continue “to be reliant on ever increasing and optimistic savings targets”, the Public Accounts Committee said.

The renewal costs of the Dreadnought and Astute submarine projects, Britain’s nuclear deterrent, were identified as the Ministry of Defence’s biggest fear of costs rising further.

Their report stated: “A significant affordability gap has again opened up; with forecast costs at least £4.9 billion, and potentially as much as £20.8 billion, more than the £179.7 billion budget.

I’m one of those who feel we should devote 5% to defence, not 2% but on the other hand, it is how it’s used or frittered away by PCists up there, innit?

Where is the threat immigration, alky ada, isis, terrorism, pirates, the Russians, the Americans?
None of the above seem to be ‘put off’ by the defence assets of the United Kingdom.

The Trafalgar class took on average half the time to build than the Astute class is taking, BAE cannot build submarines quickly or very well despite their propaganda they are rubbish at it. Trafalgars still took over four years to assemble.
Point being these replacement vessels are next to useless given their build times. Should anyone actually sink a couple then it really is game over as a portion are always in refit on workup and not at sea.

      So the build solution is?

The point is the things are useless. There is no build solution. They deter nothing.
There are a maximum of seven sea worthy subs at present. Lets be generous and say 4 out of the seven are at sea, that leaves three that cannot go to sea. A water war kicks off.
Johnny red sinks one, that leaves three. Yankee doodle dandy panics and sinks another, by mistake.
That leaves two. The sunken subs cannot be replaced by those in refit and as for building replacements in time not a hope in hell.
So what is the point of them what are they deterring, immigrants from crossing the med, isis from driving vans on the pavements, russia from nuking London?

The build solution is to not change the design every two weeks. Then go back to tractor style technology instead of Gucci touch screens (with the exception of hi-tech weapons and sensors systems). The thing Bill forgets is called NATO, the purpose of an SSN is to delouse the deterrent to allow them safe passage and then to go lob a few missiles at whoever or sink a few skimmers. Other people deal with your final paragraph, border/police etc. Trident/successor for the last bit. Love Amfortas dig at the Crabfats.

Hunter killers specifically designed to seek out and kill other subs, not one has ever achieved this purpose although they have been re-purposed to ‘lob’ cruise missiles at deserts, taking another role away from the RAF.
The ‘nuclear deterrent’ boats are designed to ‘hide’ and give other ‘nuclear armed powers’ the willies so they don’t inadvertently fire first, not that ‘we’ would fire first course ‘we’ are the good guys.

So what you are saying is basically these boats are a part of the nato membership fee, cosmic.

A water war kicks off, Johnny Red sinks one, the rest launch…………….that’s what we do. We don’t fret about it.

There is no other option left. The RAF are going to have to downgrade to Three Star Hotels.
