The Market Will Provide…

For most slimmers a visit to the local takeaway is an absolute no-no.

But not if you live in Padiham, where a chippy has started serving up dishes for dieters alongside fish and chips.

What?! Is this some new council scheme like the salt-snatchers?

It seems not:

Three members of staff at the Pendle Street fish and chip shop decided to start offering the meals after joining their local Slimming World group six weeks ago.

Oh, dear! They are doing some council employee out of a job here!

But it just goes to show there’s no need for any barmy schemes – if there really is a need, the market will supply it.

Kim Duckworth, one of the slimmers, said: “When we went to Slimming World we saw customers we hadn’t seen for a while, and then it clicked and we realised why.

“People don’t always want to cook, but there is nowhere to get proper healthy meals as a takeaway, even sandwich shops have butter and mayonnaise.

“Since we started it has been going down quite well. We have had a really good response and have customers coming from as far as Barrowford.

“We now cater for both options. If some of the family want a chippy tea but some want to be healthy then we can do both.

Of course, if the council ever introduced such a policy, there’d be no element of choice there – it’d be slimming meals for everyone

‘if the council ever introduced such a policy, there’d be no element of choice there’

But there would doubtless be a huge budget to pay for the advisors, nutritionists, administrators, inspectors and, of course, an oh-so-trendy design consultancy to produce a suitable logo.

To me, this is a very positive move. I don’t know much about why Jamie Oliver was so roundly condemned for urging healthy meals in schools – maybe it was the element of no choice in it – but why would good food not be a good choice?

I agree, of course, that the council should keep TF out of it because they’ll ruin a good move.

I think a fair amount of the criticism was because, well, he’s Jamie Oliver….

Good idea – I’m quite partial to deep-fried lettuce.

I wonder how many order the slimmer meal ‘with extra chips, please love!’..?
