Think about this a moment:
The history of cybernetic thinking that arose with information technologies … was generalized as a metaphor or model of all systems both natural and mechanical.
The problem was that the metaphor was deeply believed by some and came to be seen as a true scientific description of reality. They believed the metaphor so strongly that they fudged research data to prove that the theories were valid. They simplified away the complexity of natural systems such as ecosystems and human societies to match the requirements of simplistic models.
The consequences of this mania are still unfolding, but some scientists – such as modern ecologists – have already abandoned their earlier dogmas since the data just didn’t fit. Nothing is stable, there is no equilibrium, the systems are dynamic and contingent.
Nicely written. Absolutely at epidemic levels and above in the UK, particularly amongst so-called management, the righteous and the Poli-troughers.
Another quite amusing one has being playing out recently. For some reason those of a leftish persuasion, especially Greenies and AGW fanatics love recycling stories. They keep trotting out claims as though they are endlessly restarting a playbbok with only five or six scenarios in it. OK, back to no. 1….We’re all gonna die from sea level rise!!!
One particularly tired flakoid re-surfaced a week or so back when it was claimed here, and very vocally in OZ, that numbers of their delicate little climate scientists were living in fear of their lives because they had received ‘Death Threats…’ So serious were these that some of said climate scientists had been whisked away for their own safety, and placed in a ‘high security complex.’
Needless to say, once the snorts of derision and laughter had died away, someone said, ‘Name one. Show us.’
The results –
Other reports alleged that the ‘threats’ were at about primary school playground level.:)
