Pretty clear what needs doing. Despite all the fuss and bother, the noise, the circus, EU regulations, debates on getting out, their arrogant incompetence, the whole show – at the ballot box, we the people still have the power as to who goes to Westminster. The EU knows that, when all is said and done, we can unilaterally declare what we want.
One has to be realistic – it only needs the putting into parliament of a minority of parliamentarians the size of the Lib Dem presence and it is significant enough – 5 to 10%. The idea would be that we’d create a machine ourselves, with backing, we’d aspire to no office ourselves, we’d simply go into every constituency in the land and find which PPC to back.
This would be based on whether he/she is of the area, has experience in public life or business and whose views reflect the concerns that so many have been expressing. This machine would need to refrain from imposing its own manifesto but look to see if PPCs basically agree with a broad range of concerns. That would be enough.
Logically, the herd mentality vote would still have considerable Tories and Labour in there and one would be a minority government. They’d have to listen to this disparate bunch we put into Westminster, in order to get legislation passed. I’d imagine many of those would be UKIP but where UKIP wasn’t, it would be whoever the local was who is vaguely around that position.
I’d see it being messy – in some constituencies there’d be no one worth backing but still someone would need to be chosen – possibly the least Statist, despite him/her being on about some local issue, e.g. bicycle paths.
