Nose / Face

My working hours are 9-5, although in my job I’m expected to stay late if work needs doing . Apparently my salary ‘reflects this’ requirement. Could have fooled me.

Today was a fairly quiet one so I could have hit the door running at five on the nose, but while I was on my fag break (costing the economy money) I read in the local rag that today is, “leave work on time day”.

Well I decided that I wasn’t leaving work at five o’clock just because some sock puppet charity with nothing better to do says I should. I stayed an extra half hour and caught up on some long running task.

While I was stuck in traffic at close to six o’clock, belly rumbling and in need of a brew, it occurred to me that if I hadn’t read that article I would have been home by now.

Sometimes being such a stubborn, pig headded bugger has real disadvantages.

Been there. Done that. After 22 years at a company who had had the benefit of incredible numbers of hours of unpaid overtime from me (60 hour week, excluding travel, for 6 months at one point), they started to fuck me around.

So I pulled out my contract, from 1983, which said – 35 hour working week. And that I worked for the next year, when happily for me, they made me redundant. Happily, as I was going to walk in a couple of months anyway once I had paid off the mortgage.

Worked for myself for so long (thirty years or so) I can’t remember what “working hours” are. If there’s work to be done, I do it. Seven days a week, fourteen hours a day? Sure, if I have a deadline to meet. However, if I want to take a day off, or a week off, or a month off, I do that, too. (In fact, I took three months off a few years ago.) I just don’t get paid for it. But the best thing is that nobody tells me what I can or can’t do. I like that.
