    No, I don’t think it’s much clearer though!

    Some people are reporting on news that unemployment is up, while others are saying it’s down. Here’s why:

    The unemployment figures released today show that in the three months to December 2013, unemployment rate was 7.2pc. This is higher than the last time unemployment was reported a month ago, when the jobless rate was 7.1pc for the three months to November.

    BUT if you compare the fourth quarter of 2013 (from October to December) to the third (July to September) then unemployment is down from 7.6pc to 7.2pc. There were 2.34m unemployed people in the last quarter of 2013, 125,000 less than in the third quarter.

    seems to be an anomaly, the net number is down but the rate moved from 7.1% to 7.2%.

    Perhaps it’s just a rounding error?
    E.g., 7.149% rounds to 7.1% and 7.150% rounds to 7.2%
