“What?! No Third World Economic Refugees Or Romanian ‘Big Issue’ Sellers? Quelle Horreur!”

A furious row has broken out over Boris Johnson’s plans for a “floating village” of 50 luxury homes in the Docklands.

Gosh. Why?

…the scheme was condemned by Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales for creating a new “yuppie ghetto” in East London and called for a total rethink.

He said: ”We have always been clear that any new development must provide affordable housing and an acceptable mix of uses along with much needed long-term jobs for local people.

“The current plans for the floating village do not meet our vision or the Greater London Authority’s own London Plan. Newham Council cannot, and will not, accept a development consisting purely of luxury apartments which will be out of reach of the majority of our residents.”

Being ‘out of reach of the majority of Newham’s residents’ is precisely why such a development is so eagerly sought after, of course.

Sir Robin said: “The GLA and Carillion Igloo Genesis need to look again at their plans and ensure that there is sufficient affordable housing provided by the scheme and a range of other amenities to serve the existing community as well as any new residents.”

Do you suppose Sir Robin lives cheek by jowl with the typical denizen of Newham?

Do you suppose his nearest neighbours are a family of Somali asylum seekers or Shazneese and Duwayne and assorted children of dubious parentage and social skills?

No. Me neither.

When you go to his wikipedia page it all fits into place; he’s a labour apparatchik and therefore a member of the nomeklatura. He chaired the Scottish Labour Students (SOLS) and appears to be linked with the internal struggle to take the party back from Militant Tendency. What’s not clear is what he’s actually done for real people to warrant the title or why he was chosen as mayor of Newham, 4 times elected. Although he graduated in Chemistry, he doesn’t appear to have used his degree to get a proper job.

I would quite cheerfully if money were no object live somewhere with no big issue sellers and no foreign scum on the streets sounds like bliss to me.
Unfortunately I will never be able to afford this luxury.

As many of these people arrived in Europe on leaky boats, perhaps a suitable corner of the proposed new development could be reserved for similar craft – e.g. half-afloat rafts and old barges? Then everyone’s happy…

Well what is this stupid fuck complaining about? When the yuppies move out they will free up housing which people can move into and it will ripple down until the people he is whinging about can buy something. Unlike these people normal proposal which is to demolish housing which then is out of the reach of those that live there.

It seems a much better solution than anything these brain deal politicians ever come up with.

Sir Robin does actually live in Newham, though. By the look of him I would regard him as one of our more acceptable politicians.

    Just saying!
