You Can’t Win…

On the Netflix targeted advertising furore:

“I bet people at the company thought it would be a cool idea and drive engagement,” wrote the Chicagoan coder @bensayingthat. “But people generally don’t like knowing they’re being treated differently because of their race – especially not in the comfort of their own homes trying to watch a movie.”

OK, OK, that’s fine, message understood, no-one should consider that demographics need to be catered for in entertainment.

Londoner Tolani Shoneye, a host on The Receipts Podcast, said: “There was 30 minutes of a romcom I ended up watching last week because I thought it was about the black couple I was shown on the poster. I want to see those stories. They know I want to see those stories. Why don’t they just make more of them?”

Wait, I’m confused…?

One person thinks that it is a good idea, another person disagrees. Personally, when it comes to racism, I think that identity politics is the problem and not the answer.

Same person? Well no, read the OP, there are two different people with two different opinions. Different people have different opinions, who knew?

Best strategy for Netflix, Waitrose, swimmers et al is to ignore the Social Media Offenderati. Do that and these blackmailers will be howling in the wilderness.

First problem to solve is Netflix et al ignoring their employees who push for SM Offenderati to be appeased.

    Re: whiners – don’t like? Don’t watch.

Hmm, maybe they watch as being offended satisfies a perverse desire?
