As many who browse my output will have learned, I have no interest whatsoever in Sport; in general or in particular. I honestly just don’t see the point: but hey, that’s me. If everyone else wants to cheer their team, or a favourite individual; go for it. After all, its is one of the few pursuits in which participation is not highly or totally regulated.
At least it USED to be!
The vast majority of sporting enthusiasts don’t give two shits what politics an individual competitor holds, and a similar number aren’t phased by sexual proclivity either. Excepting the whole ‘Transgender’ garbage, where fully-grown and muscled men are now able to compete against women, the norm applies. Whether a runner, or a footballer votes Tory or Labour, or is a homosexual, makes no difference to their ability to excel in their chosen sport, and that has always been the case.
But, when one player, Israel Folau, because of his Christian views and standpoints, posted on Instagram that hell awaits “drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolaters”; and to repent because Jesus saves; he has been suspended indefinitely by the Australian Rugby Union after he posted these terrible ideas on a Social Media platform.
A second player Billy Funipola is a rugby player, who is of Tongan heritage, was born in Australia, but plays for England, having lived in Britain since he was a child. He, in common with many people of South Pacific descent, is a devout Christian. All these basic facts are relevant in consideration of the circumstances which have led to his being publicly excoriated for his views. He had the TEMERITY to ‘like’ the post of the other player, and he is therefore being targeted and also threatened with expulsion.
My question, simply put, is why?
He hasn’t stated that hell awaits “drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolaters”, all he did was state his approval of another player with like-minded ideals.
Why has the first man been expelled, and why is the second player being threatened with the same punishment? Are we ruled by the Thought Police, or do we still live in a Democracy, where freedom of thought and speech, although somewhat curtailed; still rules?
